If you’re following the 21 Day Fix program you have surely noticed that the nutrition plan allows for wine and other treats in moderation and provides a way to track what you’re indulging in. Genius!
That is one of the main reasons I was drawn to 21 Day Fix in the first place, it does leave room for LIFE to happen. That was really important for me and the way I live my life. We are all going to restaurants and parties, we are all going to have vacations and special occasions to face, so it makes sense to learn a healthier way to eat, and especially drink, in those scenarios.
That has been my focus since beginning my 21 Day Fix journey in October 2014. I’ve been following the program with great success! My proudest achievement in this journey is not that I’ve lost 20 lbs, but that I’ve been able to do it without feeling like I’m sacrificing anything. I still drink, I still go out. I’m just doing it with the strategic eye for ingredients, portion and moderation that I’ve learned from the 21 Day Fix program. I’ve made my lifestyle healthier. The operative word here is LIFESTYLE. Because this is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle.
And my lifestyle happens to include cocktails. I am a total cocktail nerd. I love to shake some up at home, play with flavors, go to special bars and restaurants all over the country that celebrate them, learn the history of the ingredients and recipes. It’s as interesting to me as food. I’m a bit of a foodie too.
So what about 21 Day Fix Cocktails, you ask?
When I heard that the 21 Day Fix creator Autumn Calabrese was coming out with a 21 Day Fix cookbook I was secretly hoping there would be 21 Day Fix cocktail recipes in there too. Low and behold, there is! I was DYING to see how Autumn tracks and portions the recipes, since I’ve just been doing it my own way since I started.
Now, my own way is carefully thought out and done in consideration of the program’s nutritional guidelines… but I can’t truly say it’s “by the book”, since it’s not in the book. But that didn’t stop me!
I took the spirit of the program and applied it to what I was already doing in my home bar which is a paleo-friendly and relatively low carb approach to cocktails, featuring fresh and natural ingredients. The result is a healthy (OK, healthier) cocktail that fits into the 21 Day Fix program and won’t derail you on your health and fitness journey!
But since we have a book… let’s see what it says about 21 Day Fix Cocktails!

21 Day Fix Skinny Margarita recipe review
Personally, I don’t care for any cocktails that (1) don’t use a shaker cup when citrus is involved, citrus is meant to be shaken; (2) use margarita mix of any kind.
I don’t like artificial ingredients dirtying up my clean cocktails.
I’m honestly a little bit surprised that Autumn included this rogue ingredient in the recipe. When I made the 21 Day Fix Skinny Margarita Recipe I followed the recipe except for that one splash of sweet and sour mixer. I don’t keep it in the house. I don’t think it belongs in a margarita. But, without the sweet and sour mixer, the concoction that resulted was WAAAAYY too tart. And I am a sour lover, so that is really saying something. Normally, other people’s critiques of my margaritas are that they are not sweet enough or that there is too much tequila. So that leads me to believe that the sweet and sour mixer is added in as an ingredient to this 21 Day Fix Skinny Margarita to sweeten things up and make it more palatable. I just can’t abide by that.
The 21 Day Fix Skinny Margarita was on the right track. I was on board right up until the sweet and sour mixer got in the way. Go ahead and try the Skinny Margarita recipe as written if you are cool with sweet and sour mixer (which I am not). It is probably OK. Knowing Autumn, it’s probably good. But if you are interested in keeping it all natural, I have my own Low Carb High Party version of a 21 Day Fix Margarita which happens to be sweet and sour mix FREE, all natural and paleo-friendly. Check it out over here.
Whichever margarita recipe you enjoy, CHEERS!
