Gasparilla Cocktails

Ahoy, Tampa Bay! Is your bar/party ready for the annual Gasparilla pirate invasion? Sure, you want to serve a rum cocktail to fully embrace the pirate spirit… but where to start? And how do you avoid the extra sugar and carbs that tend to come along with a good rum drink? I have your Gasparilla Cocktail solutions right here! Some recipes are Low Carb High Party originals and some are adapted from other rum cocktail recipes. Surrender yer livers and enjoy!

Gasparilla Grog

Gasparilla Grog is a Low Carb High Party original cocktail. A lighter but more flavorful twist on a traditional Pirate Bumbo. Gasparilla Grog is the perfect party punch. I even tested it in the vessel of choice.

Gasparilla Grog Recipe

  • 3 oz spiced rum
  • 2 oz honey simple syrup (4:1 water to honey)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz coconut water
  • cinnamon and fresh ground nutmeg garnish

Low Carb Pina Colada

Behold, mateys! The Low Carb High Party version of a classic Pina Colada. Pina Coladas can be sugary carb bombs if you use a pre-made Pina Colada mix. But why would you do that? Gross. These ingredients are fresh and natural. Skipping the mix lets you skip the preservatives and excess carbs. The result is a healthier and tastier cocktail. I followed the classic Tiki Cocktail formula (1 sour, 2 sweet, 3 strong, 4 weak) to create a perfectly balanced, homemade Pina Colada from scratch. You will never go back to a mix after you taste this low carb Pina Colada. Bonus: leave your cocktail in the freezer for about 30 minutes after shaking it up and it gets a lovely, slushy texture.

  • 0.5 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 1 oz coconut milk
  • 1.5 oz spiced rum
  • 2 oz honey simple syrup (4:1 water to honey)
  • fresh ground nutmeg and lime peel for garnish

Bon Appetit compiled 20 Rum Cocktails for Talk Like A Pirate Day. Somebody should tell them about Gasparilla. Naturally, these Rum Cocktail recipes work equally well when celebrating Jose Gaspar! These recipes are fantastic on their own, but with a minor tweak or two they can turn into low carb cocktails. My favorites are:

  • #5 Lemon Balm Honeysuckle – I would play with these proportions a bit, but honey, lemon and white rum can’t be wrong together.
