I waited to write this post until I completed my first round of the 21 Day Fix. So my overview below is based upon my own personal experience as well as detailed information from the 21 Day Fix trainer Autumn Calabrese.
What is the 21 Day Fix? In short, the 21 Day Fix is a 21 day program of 30 minute workouts and a simple but explicit nutrition guide.
The overall concept of the 21 Day Fix program is that it takes 21 Days to shake an old habit and form a new one. In that sense, this is an excellent program for anyone looking to kick start their health and fitness journey.
It’s only 21 days, which means it is a relatively short time commitment. But 21 days is enough! It’s enough time to get in the habit of daily workouts. It’s enough time to learn the nutritional guidelines that you can take with you as a foundation for eating the right foods in the right amounts for the rest of your life. It’s enough time to see and feel the benefits of drinking Shakeology everyday as a meal replacement.
The 21 Day Fix program is unique because it combines easy-to-follow portion control with simple but effective workouts. This highlights the fact that for success you need a two-pronged approach:
If you haven’t learned it by now, let me be the first to tell you… successful weight loss turns on 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. That’s why the 21 Day Fix nutrition plan works. You can’t just push play on a workout DVD and expect results. You have to dial in your nutrition, too. The 21 Day Fix containers are your color-coded guide to do just that. The containers show you what to eat (food groups) and in what amounts (portion control). No counting calories, carbs or points. No weighing your food. Just fill up the containers and eat what fits.
There are 7 short and sweet 30-minute workouts to get you through the week as well as a bonus 10 Minute Abs workout. The exercises are simple but challenging. The workouts incorporate resistance bands or dumbbells and include a modified version of each move that is suitable for beginners. The more in shape you become, the more advanced you can make each move. You can increase your resistance or dumbbell weight as you become stronger. In this way, the 21 Day Fix workouts can carry you way beyond your first 21 days. The program includes these workouts:
- Total Body Cardio Fix: cardio with a little weights to rev up your metabolism.
- Upper Fix: resistance training for chest, back, shoulders, arms and abs.
- Lower Fix: resistance training for your biggest muscles – glutes, quads, hamstrings.
- Pilates Fix: pilates-style workout focusing on the core and elongating and tightening muscles.
- Cardio Fix: dynamic cardio moves to get your heart pumping and your sweat flowing.
- Dirty 30: efficient resistance training in 4 rounds, 8 exercises working multiple muscle groups at once.
- Yoga Fix: active recovery workout to improve your balance, flexibility and strength.
